The No.1 Energy Saving Equipment for ice rinks

Eliminate the need for hot water when building and resurfacing the ice.

The REALice device forces the water to create an ordered Vortex movement inside the unit to separate the air bubbles from the water and crystalizes the lime particles. These changes created inside the REALice unit eliminates the need to use hot water to build or resurface the ice.

How to Build Better Ice with REALice: The Ultimate Rink Operator Guide

Objective

To provide rink operators with practical instructions and operational best practices for using the REALice system effectively, ensuring optimal ice quality, energy savings, and system performance with cold water resurfacing.

REALice System Overview

  • REALice is a mechanical vortex water treatment unit that removes microbubbles and dissolved gases.
  • Allows use of unheated water (~13°C / 55°F) instead of traditional hot water (up to 60°C / 140°F) for ice resurfacing.
  • Enhances freezing efficiency, improves ice clarity and hardness, and reduces compressor and dehumidifier loads.

Setup Instructions & Key Reminders

  • Install the unit on the resurfacing water line, ensuring 100% of floodwater goes through REALice.
  • Water pressure should be at least 3 bar for optimal performance.
  • Initial setup should include:
    • A deep shave or base rebuild with untreated water
    • Resurfacing exclusively with REALice-treated cold water afterward

Brine Temperature Adjustment

  • Brine setpoint should be raised by 3–5°F (1.5–3°C) due to quicker freeze times.
  • Avoid overflooding: REALice floods are faster to freeze and need less water.

Flooding Best Practices

  • Maintain consistent ice thickness (recommended 1.25–1.5 inches).
  • Perform regular dry cuts to remove soft surface snow.
  • Use clean, degassed water from REALice for resurfacing at all times.
  • Avoid using hot water tanks; city water temperature (~13°C) is ideal.

Operational Insights

  • Ice becomes stable within 2–3 resurfacing cycles.
  • Users may notice:
    • Sharper skates for longer
    • Less fog and condensation
    • Improved ice glide and hardness
  • REALice-treated water may appear cloudy—this is normal and confirms degassing.

Benefits

  • No chemicals or filters
  • Lower gas and electricity bills
  • Better ice clarity and hardness
  • Lower emissions and carbon footprint
  • No maintenance needed

Conclusion

REALice is a low-maintenance, plug-and-play solution that helps arenas:

  • Reduce energy consumption
  • Improve ice performance
  • Operate more sustainably

Following these guidelines ensures a successful transition and long-term performance with REALice.
